Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about Direct Primary Care and BluegrassMD membership.

Understanding Direct Primary Care

Direct Primary Care is a healthcare model that removes the insurance middleman from your primary care relationship. Instead of billing insurance for each visit, you pay a simple monthly membership fee that covers all your primary care needs.

This means no copays, no surprise bills, and no insurance company deciding what care you can receive. Your healthcare decisions are made between you and your doctor—the way it should be.

BluegrassMD is a physician-owned Direct Primary Care practice serving Lexington and Nicholasville, Kentucky. We offer in-home visits, office appointments, telehealth consultations, acute care, wellness services, and preventive medicine for patients of all ages.

Both models emphasize personalized care with smaller patient panels, but there's a key difference: concierge medicine typically charges a membership fee on top of insurance billing, while DPC replaces insurance billing entirely.

This makes DPC more affordable and eliminates the administrative overhead that drives up healthcare costs. You get the same personal attention without the premium price tag.

Dr. Stanton maintains a much smaller patient panel than typical primary care doctors, which means you get more time during each visit—typically 30-60 minutes instead of the rushed 7-minute appointments common in traditional practices.

You also get direct access to your doctor via text, phone, or email. No phone trees, no waiting days for a callback. Plus, we offer home visits for members who prefer care in the comfort of their own space.

Membership Questions

Yes, there's a 3-month minimum commitment for all memberships. After that, you can cancel anytime with 30 days notice. If you choose to rejoin after canceling, there's a re-enrollment fee.

Children ages 5 and up can be added to a family membership for just $25/month when a parent is a member. Children under 5 can be seen for acute visits but aren't eligible for full membership at this time.

Yes! We offer employer-sponsored memberships. This can be a valuable benefit for your team while potentially reducing your overall healthcare costs. Contact Dr. Stanton to discuss options for your business.

Members can access the Patient Hub online to schedule appointments, message Dr. Stanton, manage billing and payments, view lab results, and request prescription refills. You'll receive login information when you enroll.

Payment & Insurance

You don't need health insurance to be a BluegrassMD member. However, we recommend keeping insurance for things we don't cover: labs, imaging, prescriptions, ER visits, hospital stays, and specialist referrals.

Many of our members pair their DPC membership with a high-deductible health plan or health sharing ministry for catastrophic coverage.

No, we don't bill insurance for our services. This is intentional—it's what allows us to spend more time with you, keep prices transparent, and make healthcare decisions based on what's best for you rather than what insurance will approve.

Yes! Medicare beneficiaries are welcome to join BluegrassMD. However, Medicare cannot be used to cover our membership fee or services. Your Medicare coverage can still be used for labs, specialists, hospital care, and other services outside our practice.

We accept credit cards, HSA (Health Savings Account) payments, and ACH bank transfers. Your HSA can be used to pay for your membership and any additional services.

Care & Access

Anytime! For non-urgent questions, text or email and you'll receive a response as soon as possible—usually the same day. Urgent issues are prioritized. You can also message through the Patient Hub.

Yes! Home visits are available for members in our coverage area (Lexington and Nicholasville). This is especially convenient for families with young children, elderly patients, or anyone who prefers care in the comfort of their own home.

We never share your medical records unless you request it or your insurance company requests them directly (which requires your authorization). Your health information stays between you and your doctor.

For true emergencies, always call 911 first. But if you're unsure whether something requires an ER visit, contact us. We may be able to help you avoid an unnecessary (and expensive) emergency room trip, or coordinate your care if hospitalization is needed.

If you do end up in the hospital, let us know so we can follow up and help coordinate your ongoing care.
